In response to the growing need to improve access and services available to pediatric hearing loss patients and their families, a multidisciplinary team formed the Duke Hearing Center for Children and Families.
The center is focused on diagnosis, treatment and management of pediatric congenital or acquired ear and hearing-related disorders in children from infancy to young adulthood, and combines multiple disciplines including pediatric audiology, neurotology, otolaryngology, speech pathology, child life and social work.
Services are currently being offered at Children's Health Center, Duke Otolaryngology of Raleigh, Clinic 1I and Clinic 1F, and include:
— Audiology:
- Cochlear implant evaluations, mapping and follow-up care
- Hearing aid, bone conduction device, FM/Remote Mic evaluations and dispensing
- Hearing assessments, including visual reinforcement audiometry and conditioned play audiometry
- Newborn hearing screening
- Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing with or without sedation; sedation can accommodate both newborns and older children not behaviorally ready for traditional testing
— Otolaryngology & Neurotology
- Surgical implantation of cochlear implants and bone conduction
- Management and treatment of acute and chronic ear conditions
- Workup of sensorineural hearing loss
- Coordination with genetics, plastic surgery and neurodevelopmental pediatricians
— Speech Pathology:
- Cognitive and behavioral assessments
- Language comprehension and expression assessments
- Articulation and phonology assessments
- Augmentative and alternative communication assessments
- (Re)habilitation therapy/plans to improve learning and in-school performance
- Collaborative (re)habilitation with community and school-based therapist
— Pediatric Social Work & Child Life
- Psychosocial assessment
- Crisis Intervention
- Information, education and referral to community resources
- Pre-surgery education and facility tours to address anxieties
