Patients Can Now Receive Appointment Reminders via Text Message

Duke PDC

Starting Dec. 8, Duke Health Access Services implemented text messaging appointment reminders to patients.  In the first few days, more than 1,000 patients have registered for the service via MyChart.   This initiative is intended to give patients a convenient way to confirm appointments, and to reduce the no-show or late cancellation rates.

Patients enrolled in MyChart are eligible for the service. Text reminders will replace phone calls for patients who enroll, and are available in English and Spanish.

How to Enroll

To enroll, patients should login to, click the “Receive Text Message Appointment Reminders” under Quick Links, and follow the prompts. (Not available via the MyChart mobile app) Patients can opt-out at any time by texting STOP or through MyChart.  Once enrolled, patients will receive a text message seven days before a scheduled appointment, and a second text message two days prior.  Patients may not cancel the appointment via text within one day of the appointment. Patients will be prompted to text YES to confirm the appointment, or NO to decline.  Patients will receive a follow-up text to confirm the message was received and recorded.
