JUNE 30, 2016- Today, the Duke Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP) broke ground on a 125,000 square foot medical facility on a 12.2 acre site on Hwy 54 in Durham. The five-story facility is scheduled to open in January 2018. It is the first building to be constructed by the DHIP in its 85-year history.
"The DHIP began during the Great Depression with five examining rooms and a waiting area in an 8-foot-wide corridor," said Dr. Mark F. Newman, president of the DHIP, the Duke Health faculty practice. "Today, we're breaking ground on a state-of-the art medical facility to add to the more than 70 DHIP locations throughout North Carolina and Virginia."
The DHIP anticipates offering Primary Care, Urgent Care, OB/GYN, Neurology, Cardiology, PT/OT, Ophthalmology, and other specialties services.
"This building will be a Center of Excellence where our physicians will deliver the highest quality patient-centered care anywhere in the world," said Dr. Eugene Washington, chancellor for health affairs. "It is also a symbol of the future and of our commitment to growth and continued health to our community."
Dr. Mary Klotman, chair of Duke Department of Medicine and chair of the DHIP Board of Managers, added, "This facility is the first built solely by the faculty practice. It shows that the physician leaders of the DHIP and Duke Health are committed to pursuing the ambitious plan for future growth and patient care."
